N Scale Railroad
Often time’s space limits the amount of enjoyment one can benefit from in their various
hobbies. As an example, if your hobby was photography then you would gather greater
benefits if you had the space to set up your own darkroom. The same would apply if you
enjoy spending your time constructing projects from wood. A wood working shop
naturally would increase your enjoyment immensely. So it is with model railroading. The
more space you have available for your hobby the better you can enjoy it. That is the
major reason for the increased popularity of the N scale railroad layouts. These layouts
take no more room then the larger HO version but allows for more elaborate track setups.
Any N scale railroad hobbyist will readily admit that in order to totally be engaged in this
hobby you must possess certain skills. When these skills are combined to form your
railroad layout only then can you appreciate what you have accomplished. Skills such as
electronics, carpentry, mechanics, history, painting, scenery, architecture and
photography all blend together to create a realistic looking N scale railroad layout of
either an existing town or one from your imagination.
N scale represents the proportion 1:160 or in simpler terms 10 feet = ¾ inch. The gauge
of these N scale railroad tracks are 9mm from one side of the rail to the other. It is these
small sizes which attract people to this scale railroads. Many people simply do not have
the room to setup larger scaled railroad systems. When discussing the scale with
experienced train modelers many state that even given the extra room they would still
select the N scale in order to construct the more intricate cities and structures that make
the layouts seem real and lifelike.
Several useful terms apply in the model railroad construction scene. First we have the
term Prototype which refers to the representation of actual items which may at one time
have been in existence. The second is Freelance which often refers to model railroads
which never really existed except in ones mind. As you can see these two terms are
simply opposites of each other. Once in the early years of model railroading freelance
was predominant since each and every item in the railroad city had to be constructed by
hand. Today however the situation is different, there are an abundance of products ready
made for use in building those realistic railroad settings. Today the goal of most railroad
modelers is reality. This is one of the foremost reasons that the use of N scale railroad
layouts has become so popular.
You will find many people who simply enjoy running model railroad trains around the
cities which they have constructed and will sit for hours at a time. These are the people
who really appreciate the N scale railroad setups as they can experience new levels of
reality as they control their locomotives around the bends at various speeds or perhaps
they stop at a local town to take on cargo. It doesn’t matter to these people as long as the
N scale railroad engine is on the move.
